We work with local authorities as well as public and private sector stakeholders. Our consultancy specializes in marine and coastal ecology, with the aim of advancing scientific knowledge and supporting the preservation of marine ecosystems, while assisting coastal authorities in their restoration and sustainable development projects.
Marine Ecology & Mediterranean Biodiversity
Thalassa studies the functioning of Mediterranean coastal ecosystems, including benthic communities, habitat dynamics, and protected species. We generate robust scientific data to support coastal management and biodiversity conservation.
Environmental Assessment & Pressure Analysis
We support public and private stakeholders in assessing the environmental impacts of their projects on marine ecosystems through ecological monitoring, impact studies, and the analysis of human pressures.
Ecological Engineering & Ecosystem Resilience
We apply ecological engineering approaches to enhance the resilience of marine habitats, integrating environmental dynamics and developing solutions tailored to local conditions.
Small-Scale Fisheries & Sustainable Management
We have developed strong scientific expertise in small-scale fisheries, analysing their ecological, economic, and social dimensions within Marine Protected Areas.
Knowledge Transfer, Ocean Literacy & Outreach
We believe scientific knowledge should be shared. Thalassa develops outreach and educational activities to improve understanding of environmental challenges among local stakeholders and territories.
Ecological Monitoring
We carry out tailored ecological monitoring programmes, including habitat surveys, protected species monitoring, and ecosystem health assessments, to support evidence-based management decisions.
Environmental Impact Studies
We conduct environmental impact assessments from baseline ecological studies through construction and post-construction monitoring, integrating pressure analysis and the Mitigation Hierarchy (Avoid – Reduce – Compensate).
Restoration & Habitat Enhancement
We develop ecological restoration programmes aimed at recovering marine habitats such as seagrass meadows and benthic communities, and at designing conservation and management tools such as artificial reefs.
Small-Scale Fisheries Monitoring in MPAs
We monitor small-scale fisheries landings and conduct interviews with local fishers, in collaboration with Marine Protected Area managers, to support sustainable coastal management.
Scientific Outreach & Environmental Education
We design and deliver workshops, field activities, and educational programmes for schools, coastal users, and local stakeholders, contributing to improved understanding of marine ecosystems and ocean literacy.
Our Work Across the Mediterranean
We operate across the Mediterranean, working in 11 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and 3 Natura 2000 sites in 7 Mediterranean countries.
