The Regional Activity Center for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA) selected THALASSA Marine research to evaluate small projects related to the involvement of local civil society in the management of the SPAMIs/MPAs (Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance). This consultancy consisted in visiting 7 MPAs: Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo, Egadi Islands, Torre Guaceto, Torre del Cerrano (Italy), Karaburun-Sazan national marine park (Albania), Strunjan landscape park (Slovenia) and Iles Kneiss (Tunisie), for an interview with project managers to evaluate the mid-term reports of the projects. Finally, we evaluated the final reports of each project and wrote a detailed evaluation report on all projects developed. We concluded that the small projects developed, mostly citizen science projects, have contributed to increase knowledge and have been beneficial for the MPAs.
